Why Choose a Neville Johnson Bespoke Staircase Renovation

The staircase in your home is often taken for granted and overlooked. However, a bespoke renovation can make a real difference to the value as well as the aesthetic of your home – and renovating yours is easier than you’d think.

With over 30 years designing bespoke interiors, we know a thing or two about transforming outdated hallways into spectacular spaces. Using the structure of your existing staircase as a base, each part is expertly re-defined by hand from your choice of high-quality materials for a stunning end result.

Any staircase can benefit from a bespoke redesign, which often involves the full replacement of the newel posts, handrails, base rails and spindles with new components. Avoiding all the upheaval and disruption associated with a staircase replacement; so no plastering, joinery works, building or planning is required.

The first step in achieving an enviable entrance is to arrange a design visit. This process is all about getting to know what kind of staircase you require and how you want it to look in relation to the rest of your home. Your ideas, combined with inspiration from our designers, could create something beautifully unexpected and unique. You may be stunned at just what can be achieved with a little imagination and a few hours’ input from an expert staircase designer. Awkward turns, uneven treads and sloping ceilings can easily be accommodated, so if you think your home’s layout is too unusual to benefit from a Neville Johnson staircase renovation, we’re sure you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

No two hallways are the same, so the end result is always bespoke and exclusive to your particular home. For example, a space that’s smaller or darker can be transformed using open spindles or glass balustrades that help natural light to flow. Alternatively, a staircase renovation in a larger hallway or a period home could look even grander in dark oak.

Every material in our staircase portfolio has its benefits and will be specially selected to bring out the beauty of your home. You may want an industrial look with forged steel spindles in a dramatic powder black finish, or maybe you want to complement a modern interior with a glass staircase, designed exclusively for you. As well as numerous design options, there are also functional features such as slip-resistant treads – especially useful if you have young children.

Everything is made using the finest quality materials by time-served craftsmen. Choose from a wide range of timbers including Oak, Sapele, Maple, Beech and Walnut and add beautiful finishing touches to create a perfect entrance and an elegant first impression.

One of our more popular combinations is glass and oak. It’s a perfect design for both new homes and period renovations. The glass panels allow light to flow from windows and doorways, giving the illusion of space even in the smallest of hallways. The warmth of the wood softens the glass panelling, and the whole effect is one of a stylish welcome.

Our steel staircases are available in a number of design styles and finishes that are unique to Neville Johnson. Steel can look dramatic with forged spindles, or you could opt for minimalist chic, combining brushed steel with glass.

If you’re thinking of updating your existing staircase then here are some of our most asked questions surrounding our renovation process.

What do I need to consider before updating my staircase?

Is the staircase structurally sound? The Neville Johnson designers need an existing solid structure before they can look to remove newels/ spindles. Once you have agreed the plans for your staircase, one of our surveyors will perform a meticulous survey of the area; double-checking the smallest details to ensure a seamless and fuss-free fit.

What materials work best for a bespoke staircase renovation?

At Neville Johnson, we only use sustainable hardwoods to replace the existing timber balustrades, such as Oak, Maple, Beech, Walnut or Natural Sapele. These are often blended with toughened glass panels or steel spindles. Every staircase refurbishment we undertake is bespoke and tailored to the individual client’s requirements.
