The room that beats the algorithm

Digital media has changed the way we live almost unrecognisably, even compared to 20 years ago.

In the modern home, even spaces that have been thoughtfully designed and decorated with personality and warmth are still marred by the ping of notifications, the blue glow of our screens, and that strange, nagging feeling that pulls a phone from our pocket.

Today, more than ever, we’re conscious of the time we spend online, with searches for “phone addiction” growing more than 100% in the last 5 years. At the same time, searches for more “offline” hobbies like crochet, embroidery, model-making and crafting have all increased.

This signals a change for the first time since the digital revolution – more than ever, we’re seeking joy and pleasure from places other than our screens.

The renaissance of tactile hobbies

We know that reducing our screen time has numerous benefits, but breaking out of our brains’ natural propensity for the algorithm can be difficult, which is why creating spaces that support our offline pastimes as much as possible is so important.

Replacing scroll time with a hobby that engages and challenges our brains is one of the best ways to get off, and stay off, our screens. Tasks like knitting, model-making, or needlepoint require our brains to engage and focus, but also have a creative element that keeps us interested. The tactility of hobbies like this – the methodical movement and satisfaction of a finished product that we can hold and keep – also engages us in a way digital activities can’t.

However, one of things that our brains find tricky is fully engaging in an offline activity when screens and notifications are within reach.

Putting phones and tablets in a different room can be helpful to counteract this, as can setting aside a dedicated space. Multi-purpose living rooms or areas that your brain already associates with another activity can make it harder to keep your focus on the task at hand.

Even a small nook with a chair, some storage for supplies, and a different outlook can put us in a different mindset and stop our hands reaching for the phone.

Transforming the empty nest

While children growing up and moving out can be a poignant transition, it also represents an opportunity to embrace the next stage of life. At home, there’s an opportunity to make home work uncompromisingly for you, rather than for everyone else.

“Many of the clients I speak to haven’t treated themselves to something indulgent at home that isn’t solely centred around the whole family in a long time. The little details that we obsess over – considered ambient lighting, for example – really help to make it a stand-out space that you want to slow down and spend time in.” – Cari Bateman, Neville Johnson Sales Designer

While almost all of us have a hobby we would consider primarily “offline”, 64% of people don’t have a dedicated space in which to do them, and a quarter of respondents noted that a lack of space prevents them from taking up a new hobby, in a new Neville Johnson survey.

How to design an offline sanctuary

Creating an analogue refuge requires deliberate design choices that guard your attention and encourage engagement with your offline hobbies.

Fitted furniture can transform a spare room from an empty space and turn into a space that isn’t just more functional, but something that actually enriches life as it is now:

Choosing a room of your own

Repurposing an empty nest into a bespoke library or craft sanctuary is far more than an interior update – it’s a meaningful investment in your wellbeing. In a world calibrated to capture every spare moment of our attention, dedicating a room to offline pursuits restores balance, protects your privacy, and gives you the space to properly disconnect from the pressures of daily life. It’s the gift of freedom to slow down, disconnect from the algorithm, and rediscover the simple pleasure of purposeful time spent at home, however that looks for you.
