Making space for life’s moments: the rise of slow living
A world that rarely pauses can make it hard for us to pause with it.
Constant stimulation, the juggle of responsibilities, endless noise, and news – it’s easy to feel the edges of the day blur into one.
The pushback to this exponentially increasing pace of life has been quietly but steadily rising for years. There are now millions of posts and searches around “slow living” online and on social media, indicating our growing desire to step away from the rat race and embrace calm, wellbeing, and a gentler pace of life.

Even the smallest details in our home can impact our emotional wellbeing. Cluttered corners, glowing screens, makeshift workspaces can all nudge our mood without us even noticing.
With many of us considering how we can start to slow the pace of life, we can first turn to look at the spaces we already have. Smaller areas or underused nooks of a home can be slow living saviours, carving out spaces specifically to hit pause and take stock of the day.
Like everything else in life, homes evolve over time, and what was right for you 10 years ago might not still be fit for purpose. Children have grown or even flown the nest, your personal style may have evolved, and your priorities – how you want home to feel – will naturally be different.
At Neville Johnson, we’re always asking how we can build spaces that feel right above everything else. When life is running at a million miles an hour, we’re the architects of a slower pace of life, pressing ever so gently on the brakes to get you exactly where you need to be – in a home that works for your life’s moments.

What we’re craving – a return to quiet
Social media and tech are a fundamental part of almost all our lives, not something we can opt in or out of at will. Once only the purview of younger generations, smartphone ownership soared from 55% in 2016 to 90% in 2025 among over-50s, and older adults today are engaging with new tech at the same rate as younger generations. The responsibilities of family life, caring responsibilities, and even just keeping a healthy social life are also ones we can’t – and wouldn’t want to – put down.
Of course, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing – social media has undeniably changed the world, in many ways, for the better. That’s why slow living isn’t about stopping entirely or ruthlessly cutting things out. It’s balancing and being mindful of when we’re losing ourselves in the fast-moving current of modern life, and choosing the moments that help return us to the things that matter.
Spaces at home that encourage you to engage with slow living are more than just a luxury in a busy world. They’re a necessity to slow us down, protect our personal peace, and set us up for success when we head out into the world.

From morning rituals to evening energy
There’s a perception of a home bar as an area that belongs only to evenings and sits and gathers dust until company arrives. Yet anyone who has lived with one knows it works far harder than that. It’s a space that promotes connection and encourages quality time, as well as making hosting a dream.
In the coming weeks, we’ll be following the chronology of a home bar space, examining life’s moments elevated by the home bar from morning to night.
We’ll also follow how these spaces in the home help you enter a slower pace of life. Solo mornings for peace, introspection, and coffee. Considered, connected, conversational family time in the afternoons, be that after the school run or getting home from work. And later, when the lights soften and the chatter of the party rises, the perfect hosting space appears so you can make memories with the people that really matter, without rush or stress.
A home bar is designed for all of this. It’s a place you return to because it evolves throughout the day with you, designed only for pleasure, calm, and enrichment.
After all, life’s moments don’t wait until the evening.
“Many of the clients I speak to haven’t treated themselves to something indulgent at home that isn’t solely centred around the whole family in a long time. Home bars and beverage stations are an opportunity to curate a space they can be proud of and make all their own. The little details that we obsess over – considered ambient lighting, for example – really help to make it a stand-out space that you want to slow down and spend time in.” – Cari Bateman, Neville Johnson Sales Designer
A home that moves at your pace
Many of us want life to move a little more gently, but the reality of modern living makes it hard to find those quieter moments. The right space can help. Not by slowing the world outside, but by changing how you experience the moments within it.
We can never know what each new day will hold, so spaces that can change with it make all the difference. Mornings bring stillness. Afternoons create room to regroup. Evenings invite a new energy into the home. When a space adapts without ever asking anything of you, slowing down suddenly feels simpler, whatever the time of day.

Enter the rituals space
Think about tomorrow morning when the house is quiet and the light is soft. Before the day begins, imagine a space that that invites you into the day rather than pushing you through it.
In the next chapter, we’ll step into that moment and explore calming rituals with the power to shape the beginning of the day.
We’ll meet you there.
