The hallway is one of the most neglected spaces in our home, yet it is the space that sets the tone for the rest of your abode. Even if you have a small hallway design, you can create an impact by injecting a little creativity and personality. We’ve shared our top tips on how you can refresh your hallway and connecting spaces below.
Even if you don’t have an open plan layout, you can still connect spaces with key colours and schemes. This ensures there is a natural flow as soon as you step through the door moving into additional adjoining rooms.
If your home is a homage to neutrals and magnolia, it will make a magnificent canvas for seasonal experimentation. Swap out winter decor with bold prints, floral fabrics, natural textures and jute rugs. You don’t need to go and buy new items either, sometimes all it takes is re-arranged furniture, a touch of paint and a few plants.
Here are our top 3 decor tips:
1. Gather and curate items that will be on display in one place before you start to style.
2. Use mirrors and glass objects to create the illusion of space.
3. Find balance and consider the placement of objects. Don’t put similar objects too close together, or crowd small areas with large objects.
No-one wants to walk into a dark, dingy space, so make use of natural light. Open up windows, include fanlights or glass panels in front doors, and make use of mirrors in the hallway to bounce light around the space. If you don’t have any stand out focal points in your hallway, a great way to create one is with statement lights. Choosing a hung pendant not only provides much-needed light but acts as a centrepiece creating the illusion of height in a space.
To help rooms feel larger, lighter and brighter, go for pale paint colours. Cornflower blue and white is a great choice for Georgian hallways while original Victorian wood features can look fabulous painted cream or white. If you go for bright white walls, add interest and depth by painting cornices, mouldings and skirting boards in off whites or other neutrals.
If yours is an older house, make the most of its beautiful period features. Think about flooring. If you live in a Victorian home, embrace features such as parquet flooring or original tiling – this type of flooring is easier to clean than carpet too. If you live in an early 20th-century property, Art Deco features such as wall lamps from the 20’s or 30’s look incredible. Colours can also reflect your home’s original architecture; Victorian spaces look amazing in soft neutrals; Georgian houses suit a monochrome palette, and geometric designs look great in Art Deco style homes. To keep your space clutter-free, build shelving above your doorway and place baskets on it for storing items you need but don’t use every day.
Liven things up this season by bringing a little of the outdoors in. The easiest way to bring spring indoors is by arranging fresh flowers, especially bright and playful daffodils by the doorway. If you want to add greenery to your home all year round, then a selection of indoor plants is ideal.
Indoor plants are as popular as ever and with so many to choose from you’re bound to find the perfect addition. The RHS revealed its horticultural trends for the year ahead and these included varieties such as Alocasia, swiss cheese plants, large ferns and prayer plants all of which we’ve seen a growing amount of on social media.
If you have a narrow console table, shelf or window ledge; these are all opportunities to display potted plants, swapping them out whenever you feel like it.
Whether you have an empty corridor, entrance or landing, hanging a gallery wall can add a much-needed touch of personality. If you have a set of photos full of memories or a collection of art that’s taken years to source, a gallery wall is a perfect solution to hang and display them. Look at what mood you want to evoke and whether it fits with the space and interior style. Experiment with bold colours and patterns for an extra wow factor, or keep it minimal with calm tonal hues or monochrome prints. When curating your gallery wall lay the pictures out first and decide on the spacing in-between your pieces, you don’t want it to become overwhelming so be careful with the number of frames and styles you use.
Often, a staircase can be the first thing that people notice when entering a home, which means it’s vital that your staircase looks the part and works with your hallway. A bespoke option can impact a space and transform an entrance from the messy, cluttered area that it so often becomes.
The combination of oak paired with glass has become a trendy choice for staircase designs in recent years. Lighter coloured woods such as oak help to create a light and airy atmosphere and the addition of glass opens up the space – allowing light to flood through, creating the impression of more room.

Our new staircase looks fantastic. We’ve had lots of compliments and it has transformed our hallway. The whole experience was great from beginning to end, from discussing our requirements to the finished article.
Mr & Mrs Begbie, Hampshire
The room is transformed and has been hugely admired by family and friends. I was pleasantly surprised by the attentive and courteous client care – everything went according to plan and nothing seemed too much trouble. They were in regular contact before and after the installation. I would highly recommend Neville Johnson to anyone wanting to transform a room.

I cannot recommend this company enough. From first contact we received very high quality service. We were informed as to everything that was going on, which was backed up by the necessary paperwork, plans and phone calls. The fitter was competent and the work he did we can’t fault.
