Designer Insight Q&A
What was the client’s brief?
The client wanted to open up the dark, heavy and dominant staircase with a lighter, more open design. Their vision was a luxurious yet contemporary aesthetic, seamlessly blending the old with the new to create a sense of spaciousness, while staying connected to the beautiful original timber frame detailing of the house.
What was the most challenging part?
Achieving a harmonious connection of materials throughout the home was key! To keep it all consistent, the client colour-matched their existing beams to a sample of our Natural Oak, and their skirting boards and door architraves to our exclusive Charcoal-painted finish, ensuring a seamless flow throughout.
How did you approach the design?
Opening up the gallery landing was a game-changer. Our in-line glass panels were the natural choice, allowing light to flow effortlessly through the space. But contrast was equally important – bold colour detailing helped to define the staircase and create a striking contemporary statement.
At Neville Johnson, we believe every staircase should be as unique as the home it belongs to. That’s why we offer a free, no-obligation design consultation, allowing our expert designers to explore your vision and create a bespoke solution tailored to your space, style and architectural features.
From carefully considered materials to finishes you may not have thought of, we collaborate with you to ensure your staircase isn’t just stunning – it uplifts your entire home.
